Welcome back to our newsletter! This week, we’re excited to share some simple fun phonic games you can play and enjoy with your child at home. These activities are not only fun but also reinforce important phonic skills.

A little boy spying

1. I Spy

This classic game is a great way to introduce phonics in a playful manner.

Here’s how to play:

  • Take turns saying, “I spy with my little eye, something that begins with the sound ___.”

  • For example, if you choose the letter "B," say, “I spy something that begins with /b/.”

  • Encourage your child to look around and guess the item!

2. Phonics Treasure Hunt

Turn your home into a fun phonic treasure hunt!

Here’s how:

  • Create a list of items around the house that begin with specific phonics sounds (e.g., “s” for sock, “t” for toy).  Use the sound you have taught or ones you are currently teaching them.

  • Give your child clues or a list and let them search for each item.

  • As they find each one, have them say the sound it starts with!

  • Alternatively, you can just say the sound are teaching them and ask them to see how many things they can find that begin with that sound.

3. Art Activities for Beginning Sounds

Combine creativity with phonics by doing art activities:

  • Choose a letter and have your child create a collage of items that start with that sound. For example, for the letter "C," they can cut out pictures of a cat, car, and cake from magazines.

  • Encourage them to say the sounds as they create their artwork!

  • You can also find artwork ideas on the internet and do things for each sound, for example for a you can make an ant, colour an apple or do apple printing.
