Hello Families,
Welcome to February! This month, we’re diving into the wonderful world of phonics—the building blocks of reading and writing.
What is Phonics? Phonics is about connecting sounds to letters (for example, the sound /s/ for the letter ‘S’). It helps children sound out words and become confident readers. And the best part? Phonics can be playful, easy, and fun for the whole family!
Try These at Home:
1. Sound Scavenger Hunt Choose a sound (like /s/). Ask your child to find three things around the house that start with that sound—maybe a sock, spoon, or shoe.Tip: Try this challenge during tidy-up time or while setting the table!
2. Clap the Syllables Say a word together (like “ba-na-na”). Clap once for each part: ba-na-na = 3 claps. Try your child’s name, family members, or favourite foods.
3. Phonics in Small Doses Five minutes is plenty! Short, playful bursts help kids learn more effectively than long sessions. |
Want a jump start in phonics? Take a look at our Phonic System to become Confident Early Readers, the first section is free, click the link here for details |
Social Activity: Try the Sound Scavenger Hunt and comment here tell us what you found! |
