Creating a Cozy Reading Corner at Home

July 7th, 2025

Cozy reading corners

Imagine having a special spot just for you and your child to snuggle up with a good book—a place where stories come alive and reading feels magical. This week, I want to share some simple, inspiring tips to help you create your own cozy reading corner at home. Whether you have a spacious room or just a little nook, you can make reading time truly special.

Why Set Up a Reading Corner?

Having a dedicated reading space helps your child:

  • Build regular reading habits

  • Associate books with comfort and relaxation

  • Enjoy a quiet retreat away from life’s distractions

Here’s How You Can get Started

1. Find the Perfect Spot

Look around your home for a quiet corner with some natural light. This could be by a window, inside a play tent, or even just a comfy chair tucked away in the living room.

2. Make It Extra Comfy

Add soft cushions or a bean bag, and maybe a fluffy rug. A cozy blanket can make the space even more inviting—perfect for curling up together.

3. Set the Mood with Lighting

If your corner doesn’t get much sunlight, try a gentle reading lamp or some twinkly fairy lights to create a warm, welcoming glow.

4. Keep Books Close By

Arrange a small selection of books within easy reach—on a low shelf, in a basket, or even a repurposed magazine rack. Try swapping in new books from time to time to keep things exciting!

5. Make It Personal

Invite your child to help decorate. Add their favorite stuffed animals, hang up some of their artwork, or make a special sign together to give the spot a personal touch.

6. Limit Distractions

Try to keep toys, screens, and other distractions out of the reading corner. This way, it becomes a true getaway for stories and imagination.

My Favourite Tip: Make Reading Time a Ritual

Set aside a regular time each day for you and your child to enjoy the reading corner together. Whether it’s a bedtime story or a quiet weekend morning, these moments can help your child develop a lifelong love of reading.

Remember children do what they see, so take this opportunity to sit with your child and read quietly yourself, it is the perfect excuse to sit down with that much needed cup of tea!
