Winter Wonders - Exploring the Season with Curiosity

Hello families,

January’s chilly days are perfect for slowing down, getting cozy, and exploring the wonders of winter—inside and out!

This week, we’re sharing easy activities to spark curiosity, language, and play—no special supplies needed.

❄️ Winter Word Hunt

Go on a “word hunt” together, either at home or while out for a walk.

  • Look for things that remind you of winter: hats, scarves, ice, soup, clouds.

  • For each one, say the word together, talk about its colour or shape, or make up a silly sentence!

🧊 Ice Cube Painting (Younger Children)

  • Freeze some water with a drop of food colouring or juice in an ice tray.

  • Let your child “paint” on paper with the coloured ice—great for sensory play and learning about melting.

🧤 Sort & Match Game

  • Gather winter clothes (hats, gloves, scarves).

  • Ask your child to match pairs, sort by colour, or try describing each item.

🍫 Winter Chocolate Game

Looking for a fun, active way to bring the whole family together on a chilly day? Try the classic Chocolate Game! It’s silly, exciting, and sure to make everyone giggle.

What you need:

  • A tray

  • A bar of chocolate (chilled in the fridge works best—leave it wrapped!)

  • A hat, scarf, and a pair of mittens or oven gloves

  • A knife and fork (child-safe if needed)

  • A die (singular of dice)

How to play:

  • Gather everyone and sit in a circle on the floor with the tray and chocolate bar in the centre.

  • Take turns rolling the die.

  • If you roll a 6, quickly put on the hat, scarf, and mittens or oven gloves.

  • Using only the knife and fork, try to unwrap and cut a piece of chocolate—and eat it with the fork!

  • Keep going until someone else rolls a 6, then it’s their turn to dress up and try.

  • The game continues until all the chocolate is gone or everyone’s had a chance to play.

Tip: This game is as much about laughter as it is about chocolate, so be ready for lots of giggles and a bit of friendly chaos!

I have so many fun memories of playing this game as a child.

📝 Winter Story Time

  • Read a winter-themed book or make up your own story about a snowy adventure.

  • For little ones, talk about what animals do in winter or imagine what it would be like to build a snowman.
