With a new school year just around the corner, I know many parents are feeling both excited and a little nervous about getting back into the swing of things. Over the years, I’ve picked up some helpful routines—both as a teacher and a mum—that can make mornings calm and organized for everyone. Here are some of my favourite back-to-school tips to help your family start each day on a positive note.

1. Organize with Subject Folders
One thing that worked brilliantly with my own children was creating a folder for each subject at school. We used clear, zip-top folders and labelled them with the subject name—English, Maths, Science, and so on. All their books, worksheets, and homework for each subject went into the right folder.
Why does this help? When your child’s timetable says “Maths” and “English” one day, they simply grab those folders and put them in their school bag. No more last-minute searching for missing books or loose homework! This little system made our mornings so much smoother.

2. Pack the Night Before
Encourage your child to pack their school bag before bedtime. Together, check their timetable and make sure all the folders, stationery, and any special items (like sports gear or art supplies) are inside and ready to go.
The bonus:Morning routines become so much easier! All your child has to do is add their lunch and water bottle, and they’re set for the day—no more morning rush or forgotten items.

3. Prepare Lunches and Snacks in Advance
If possible, prepare lunchboxes and snacks the evening before. Store them in the fridge overnight so your child can just grab and go in the morning. You can even get your child involved in choosing and packing healthy options!
4. Set Out Uniforms or Clothes

Lay out your child’s uniform or outfit the night before—including socks and shoes! This small step saves so much time (and arguments) in the morning.

5. Create a Calm Morning Routine
Try to set a regular wake-up time that allows for a little buffer—enough time for breakfast and getting ready without feeling rushed. You might build in a few minutes for a special cuddle or quick chat before heading out the door.

6. Use a Family Calendar or Checklist
Hang a simple weekly calendar or checklist somewhere visible. List important events, club days, or reminders for special items. This helps everyone stay on the same page and teaches children responsibility for their own schedule.
A Final Thought
Remember, every family is different—find what works for yours and don’t worry about being “perfect”. The goal is to help your child feel calm, confident, and ready to learn each morning.
If you try any of these tips, let me know how they work for you! And if you have your own back-to-school routines that make life easier, I’d love to hear about them—just hit reply.
Wishing you and your children a happy, organized, and successful start to the new school year!
Warm regards,
Angela
